CHROMA: Piece by Piece

CHROMA is an immersive art collective featuring pieces from 8 local artists. Learn more about their work, and what inspired their pieces.

RHYS FARRELL
DIAMONDS IN THE SKY

“This piece was constructed through the process of layering of geometric shapes and patterns. The key element of shapes, colours and lines come together to express my interest in optical painting and colour relationships. Having a variety of these elements layering over and under each other create the final image.”

MARIA “DINA” GARCIA GALURA
KALIMBAHIN, TROPICALLA

“My art is spontaneous, and the process is inspired by the milestones in my life. As I look back at building dreams and striving to be a better person, balloon sizes and colours represent the struggles, victories and awesome people who have supported me.

CAINE CHOW
SAN•GO (CORALS IN JAPANESE),
MO•RI (FOREST IN JAPANESE)

“When I enter the ancient forest, there is a sense of deep energy in the vastness of the trees, plants, earth and even decay. There, we feel small and insignificant but at the same time grounded as a part of that ecosystem. I believe that all people are deeply connected to nature and each other. There is something powerful and sacred in bringing even one or two plants into, or completely filling, our living spaces with nature. Mo•ri is an exploration of this connection to nature that causes us to crave not only to be in nature but to have nature in our spaces.”

RACHAEL MECKLING
FEMMES TROPICALE

“This piece reflects the beauty of all the women I was blessed to see during my solo travels of 2018. Like a sponge, I soaked up so many new faces, fashions and attitudes of three very unique destinations, Bali, Indonesia, Negril, Jamaica, and Los Angeles, California. Being on my own, doing what I pleased, I truly felt my womanly power.”

MICHELLE HOOGVELD
KALEIDOSCOPE OF DREAMS

“Creating on both canvas and walls, I find myself drawn to the interplay between abstracted shapes, bold colours, and realistic images of people, animals and elements from nature. I approach my artwork through a process of planned compositions with room for intuitive play and unstructured experimentation.”

REI DUNCAN
SAN•GO (CORALS IN JAPANESE),
MO•RI (FOREST IN JAPANESE)

“San·go speaks to the dichotomy between the strength and fragility of our natural world. Like the natural world, this piece came to life and evolved over time. Beginning as a reflection of the places I have lived, been, and miss; as San·go came to life I found myself drawing inspiration from the rugged, expansive coastline and bushland of the east coast of Australia. The colours, textures, shapes and sensory stimuli of the native flora and fauna all informed and inspired.”

TYLER LEMERMEYER
PRACTICALLY PASSION, AURA

“Practically Passion- I like to explore pattern and layers in my works to invite the viewer’s eyes to dance around the entirety of the piece. I try to achieve this through layering and by intertwining different subjects and styles together. Bright pink leaf shapes cast bold shadows, and outlines of different plants layered over top contribute to the complexity of the design, but its limited analogous colour palette serves to unite the piece.”

MARIKA STYBA
SECRET EDEN, KEEP IN TOUCH, REACH

Keep in Touch- “The use of soft velvet to colour our wall is a foundation of touch and depth that immediately makes one want to reach out.” Secret Eden- “The garden is an extension of the theme of being in the moment and interacting with our natural world. Creating dimension and opportunities to sit and simply “be” affords the participant a quiet moment of reprieve from the pressing stresses of the outside realm.” Reach- “Its placement creates an opportunity for the viewer to engage at various levels and has a great dimensional quality that leads the viewer to want to interact at various vantage points.”
